Myths about coworking space

Debusting 5 Myths Related to Coworking Spaces

Coworking, even though it’s a very recent development in India, it has transformed into an industry with diverse network of spaces and communities of all types and styles. Even then, people seem to have a lot of misunderstandings about coworking owing to the myths that prevail regarding it. Below are some common myths related to coworking spaces which you must know.

1. Coworking spaces are for small businesses

When it comes down to business, people have different rules to follow. The same applies to coworking spaces; some coworking are accessible by all while some are very specific about what kind of businesses can access their facility. This doesn’t mean coworking spaces aren’t for big enterprises or vice versa.

If you want to shift your business to a coworking facility, find a coworking brand like Smartworks which can accommodate big enterprises like yours in their coworking facility.

2. They are extremely expensive

Opposed to the belief, coworking space is much affordable than renting a traditional workspace. At coworking spaces, you pay the cost of the number of seats you use, which can be cut down or increased later as per the requirement. On the contrary, setting up a new office in the traditional workspace is overly expensive. Even then, enterprises have very limited flexibility to expand or cut down their leased space.

In addition, coworking spaces offer additional IT and connectivity services which make them even more affordable.

3. Coworking spaces are distracting and unproductive

The general environment at a coworking office is different from the traditional office and more conducive to work. Besides, working at a coworking space offers more freedom and makes people more intuitive about their work.

4. It is the same as working from home:

Working from home comes with its own set of pros and cons. It is definitely cool initially but the lack of interaction and movement make it detrimental for your employees’ health. On the other hand, the coworking environment ensures your employees have enough social interactions and movements, ensuring that they are their productive best.

5. Coworking won’t survive in India

No matter what people say, coworking is here to stay. In fact, some of the biggest businesses such as Facebook, Amazon and even Google are proactively using coworking spaces instead of setting up their own office. As per data collected by MYHQ Digest, the potential market of coworking space in India is around 12-16 million seats. Apart from that, the number of coworking members is expected to rise to 3.8 million by 2020 and 5.1 million by 2022.

So, to sum up, If you’ve been planning for long to shift to coworking space, don’t let these myths related to coworking spaces influence your decision. Instead, take a trip to any of our coworking spaces and find out the reality yourself. Shifting to a coworking space can be one of the toughest decisions for any enterprise, but it is also a fruitful one.

coworking trends - IISM

India’s leading Sports Management Institute IISM moves into Smartworks, Mumbai

  • Smartworks becomes the first managed office space provider to configure workspace and coworking trends for an Education Institute
  • IISM offers specialized degree programs in association with the University of Mumbai

Mumbai, August 12th, 2019: Smartworks has become India’s first agile workspace space provider to apply space as a service for classroom training. The firm has leased out 25000 sq.ft to Nilesh Kulkarni’s International Institute of Sports Management (IISM). For the first time, a management education institute has moved into an agile workspace with coworking trends, which otherwise is usually occupied by enterprises, start-ups, and freelancers. Smartworks has a total footprint of 2.8 million sq. ft. across 23 locations in 9 cities and is the only Indian bootstrapped workspace provider to have become profitable.

With IISM in Smartworks’ facility at Fleet House in Mumbai’s Andheri locality, the market leader in enterprise onboarding has brought in a completely untouched sector, Education, into the rapidly growing ambit of co-working spaces. This new addition will change the way shared workspaces were perceived; they are not just for working but for learning as well.

IISM, founded by former Indian Test cricketer Nilesh Kulkarni, is the foremost institute involved in the most unexplored education avenues to meet the demands of the growing sports industry. Imparting excellence in the sports educational sector for 10 years, IISM has emerged as one of the best institutes for sports management education in India. The education institute will be conducting classroom training for specialized degree programs namely Bachelor of Sports Management and Master of Sports Management in association with the University of Mumbai and 11 months autonomous Post-Graduation Program in Sports and Wellness management within the Smartworks premises with over 500 students.

The facility is now booked more than 90% and has a total footprint of almost 1 lakh sqft in Mumbai. It provides close proximity to business district Bandra- Kurla complex and the Western Expressway and currently hosts a mix of corporates such as CRISIL, Marsh Insurance, NEC Technologies to name a few.

“We are excited to have India’s most prestigious Sports Management institute with new coworking trends in Smartworks . We have yet again proved our capability of configuring spaces as per client requirements irrespective of the business domain. With this first of its kind association between an education institute and Smartworks, we are certain that these spaces will become the next classrooms soon. We remain committed to providing unmatched experience and solutions to businesses that will help them boost the company as well as industry growth to remain productive and further the step towards innovation in the country,” said Neetish Sarda, Founder of Smartworks.

Commenting on the recent move-in Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder IISM, said, “At IISM we believe in nothing but the best when it comes to imparting education to our students so that they learn and grow. We want our students to meet their aspirations in an environment where they are pumped up with energy and positivity. Our ultimate goal is to ensure an atmosphere for them so that they stay active, productive and lively throughout their sessions. IISM campus has eight 30-seater to 120-seater classrooms, an exclusive research lab for our students, a cafeteria with a vibe where students can enjoy break time and common breakout areas for students to unwind themselves during free-time. Given that the facility is centrally located in the city, adjacent to Marol metro station, it is convenient for the students to access any mode of transportation for commuting which makes the location a strategic fit for our institute.”

Smartworks has created a niche for itself in the co-working space industry with new coworking trend and by bringing enterprises into the purview and leasing entire floors to the latter.

“We are witnessing growing interest from corporates in Mumbai across sectors including IT, sports, banking and e-commerce among others. The large demand stems from the benefits and array of facilities provided to our members across our centers which include state-of-the-art infrastructure, vast opportunities to network and exchange ideas, a productive work environment, and services which ensure a happy and stress- free workspace,” Neetish added.

Since its inception in April 2016, Smartworks has been aggressively expanding its footprint across key cities in India due to the growing demand for agile workspaces. At the moment, there are more than 1000 shared workspaces present in all the major Indian cities with over 200 players operating them. Industry experts expect that with the coworking trend, the numbers will grow with time and leased spaces by coworking firms in tier 1 and tier 2 cities could reach 6 – 10 million sq. ft. by 2020. According to a recent CBRE report, in the first quarter of 2019, flexible workspaces saw a leap of 277% in leasing to around 3 million sq. ft. of office spaces.

Over the years, big enterprises and SMEs are becoming an integral part of the Indian coworking community by setting up their offices in these agile workspaces. After being largely adopted in the major cities of the country, the industry is now spreading its wings to tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

your daily dose of inspiration

Smartworks: Your Daily Dose of Inspiration

When we’re inspired and motivated, it reflects in our work. We feel a sense of purpose, inspired by the thought that our skills and talent have been put to good work and we’re doing what we need to be doing. But then, just like everything else, it evaporates and makes us feel frustrated. Once lost, inspiration is hard to come by and it’s a herculean process to recover the missing motivation, even if you love your job. According to the renowned English cartoonist, Quentin Blake, “Inspiration is some mysterious blessing which happens when the wheels are turning smoothly”. We have the zeal to work with sheer dedication as long as everything is favourable and running smoothly. There could be numerous reasons for the hiccup, yet the most important is the working environment at the workplace. A dispirited and gloomy working environment is sure to kill the right vibe, making employees demoralised and disoriented towards work.

Inspiration is the fuel, which helps us keep moving forward in every aspect of life, especially at our workplace where several factors distract us and affect our productivity and growth. Thus, it is important that organisations take good care that they have a workplace which influences and motivates employees to work with their full potential and ensure more productivity and growth. Although it’s not possible to force inspiration on someone, yet it is entirely feasible to create an environment that is conducive to inspiration. With the changing time, the way we work is also changing and unlike yesteryear, now enterprises have the opportunity to choose office spaces according to their needs and preferences, thanks to the emergence of coworking spaces.

A concept mushroomed in the west; coworking has made a strong foothold in the Indian market and has grown exponentially in the last few years. Smartworks Hacks for Maximized Productivity

7 Smartworks Hacks for Maximized Productivity

Coworking is becoming a trend, and a lot of professionals are switching from traditional cubicles to inspiring coworking spaces. Taking that into consideration, coworking brands should ensure their spaces meet the corporate definition of ‘productive workplace’. Therefore, today, we have come up with 7 smart hacks to transform your coworking space for good; to ensure they speak of nothing but productivity.

1. Conducive location

Choosing the right location is of utmost importance. The idea behind using co-working space is to cut down the travel time and use it more effectively towards the growth of your member’s business.

In addition, central locations allow coworking spaces to offer easy accessibility to facility users and their clients. Therefore, make sure your coworking space is located centrally, easily accessible by all the potential customers.

2. Personalize your coworking workspace

The interiors have a lot to do with productivity. Author Julie Morgenstern says, “people need to build a visual cocoon for themselves”.

To understand the importance of interiors, take it as the central nervous system of your office. If it is in a good state, the positive vibes would affect morale, encourage good work ethics, and ensure the delivery of work. If mastered correctly, the interior of your coworking space can be a driving factor for the members’ business, pumping people with energy and boosting their productivity.

Hence, personalize your coworking space to make it look more inviting, more lively, and full of energy and enthusiasm.

3. Use the right furniture

When people opt for coworking spaces over the traditional workspaces, they are clearly in a mood to convert their time into profits. Taking that into consideration, the coworking spaces should take measures to ensure the desired outcomes are achievable. One way to get started is by using the right furniture which can ensure comfort for everyone. In addition, the office furniture should foster the usage of right postures, because it helps the members focus better, avoid health hazards and improve efficiency.

Use ergonomic furniture which is designed in accordance with corporate standards, and while taking ideal ergonomic conditions into consideration.

4. Make sure the vibe is right

The vibe at the workplace is the most underrated factor and the same applies to coworking spaces. The right vibe can fill people with positive energy which would automatically boost productivity. You can do that by working on two essential factors:-

  • Use the right lighting: The lighting affects mood and therefore, your productivity. Additionally, proper lighting is mandatory for proper visibility.
  • Set the temperature correctly: Whether too hot or too cold, the end result is loss of productivity. Thus, set the temperature correctly; install efficient heat ventilation and air conditioning systems.

5. Encourage conversation for networking

Coworking spaces are filled with a mix of potential customers and growth partners. So, instead of letting the monotony of work hamper productivity, encourage people to indulge in conversation with others. Unless they talk to each other, they won’t get the opportunity to convert simple conversation into meaningful partnerships.

Coworking spaces are best known for networking opportunities, helping members share ideas and achieve their business goals by connecting with like-minded people.

6. Offer noise cancellation earphones

Noise is the chief complaint in most coworking spaces. Therefore, noise cancellation headphones are #1 recommendation for people who believe silence is their sound of productivity. Private cabins can too be a great way to ensure optimal productivity at coworking spaces.

7. Use technology to your advantage

Technology simplifies things and saves time i.e. boosts efficiency. Hence, at Smartworks, we believe a perfect synergy of inspiring infrastructure with smart, time-saving technology ensures that businesses work at their efficient best. Simple things such as apps which automates a lot of mundane tasks, cloud storage systems, etc. can save a lot of time, and maximize the efficiency of people.

Productivity is about finding the right balance between work and satisfaction, and the above-mentioned hacks can help you ensure that balance at your coworking space.

Things to Consider Before Renting Office Space in Noida

When you are looking for renting office space in Noida, there are some prominent things that you need to consider before finalizing your decision. All these points of discussion at different locations though serve well when you are looking for something lucrative that is well under your budget, suits your location requirements as well as the amenities needed. Renting a perfect office space that caters to every work need is difficult though but not impossible.

Here is our well-designed checklist of things to consider before renting office space in Noida for your venture:

1. Gather your Workspace Requirements:

The first step is to determine your workspace requirements, whether you are looking for a full-fledged office space for a large team size or just a coworking space for solo workmanship. You have to determine the fact that whether the workplace will help you grow and improve as well as save your commuting time. All you have to do is list out your expectations of a perfect workspace and plan accordingly.

2. Choose an Appropriate Location:

One of the vital things to consider before renting office space in Noida is the commuting distance. You don’t need a workspace so far away from the population that makes local transportation inaccessible. Your employees would be so exhausted reaching the workplace in time, throwing the productivity factor out of the window. Always consider an office space where your team can adjust to commuting easily or if you don’t have a large team size and planning to expand, check out a location with major population nearby that will help you identify the local talent.

3. Check out the Amenities Offered:

An ideal office space is one that offers every work and play amenity. Your team is likely to appreciate an office space that is nearer to eating places as well as entertainment centers. Perfect office spaces should have a relaxing area in addition to a cafeteria to handle the appetizing needs and for the very vital cup of coffee. A free trial or a pass can do wonders when finalizing your initial picks.

4. Check out the Pricing Policies:

Coworking is all about the right vibe. Everything about coworking spaces right from the infrastructure to the interior is designed to harness productivity. In fact, some coworking brands offer customization options which let enterprises decide the look and feel of their workplace in accordance with their requirements. Enterprises, using this feature, can customize the interiors, lighting, and even the furniture to set
the mood and ensure their employees are working at their productive best.

5. Consider the Security Measures:

A Perfect office space is one that has been built keeping in mind the security of its employees during occupational hazards or any emergencies. A guide must offer you a roadmap of all the security measures to be taken in case of an emergency such as the emergency exit, fire extinguishers and more.

6. Services Agreement:

After finalizing the perfect renting office space in Noida, the last step to consider is understanding the licensing details and the lease agreement. You should consider taking help from the professionals for understanding the various terminologies, insurance factors, security deposit to be offered and more. Also, check out for a non-compliance clause that can offer you every amenity promised at the time of lease signing whenever you require.

Coworking has disrupted the traditional working environment today, and thus the segment has witnessed a massive growth in the last five years. In fact, the demand for coworking continues to grow and by 2020, approximately 13 million people are expected to be working at coworking spaces. This brings us to an important question – why is coworking growing in popularity? Is coworking really the future of enterprises in India? If we consider the statistics, coworking most definitely is the future of enterprises. Below are some important reasons why coworking might be the future of enterprises in India.

1. Mobility is a growing demand:

The present working class is more interested in securing jobs that offer flexibility at their workplace. Understanding the demand, enterprises want to portray themselves as ‘new-age’ company with a modern work culture to attract young talent. For the workers, coworking offers a choice to access different choices in working styles in order to match their productivity.

2. Coworking has become synonymous with productivity:

A lot of big enterprises such as Amazon and Starbucks have already shifted to coworking spaces, and the reasons are beyond cost saving. Productivity is one aspect which is contributing to this shift from traditional workspaces to coworking. Enterprises, no matter what their size is, have realized that working at coworking spaces alongside like-minded individuals can help boost productivity, lead to innovation, and foster employee satisfaction.

3. Coworking offers a thriving work environment:

Coworking spaces allow members to work in a collaborative environment where they can network with each other to form symbiotic business relationships. People using co-working space can actually meet people from diverse backgrounds, discuss their business ideas, and form lucrative relationships. In addition to offering a work environment filled with networking opportunities, coworking presents people with a sense of community. Being at coworking can integrate a sense of belonging to a prosperous and productive community among workers. This sense of belonging can motivate workers to work harder and deliver better results.

4. Coworking spaces offer the right vibe:

Coworking is all about the right vibe. Everything about coworking spaces right from the infrastructure to the interior is designed to harness productivity. In fact, some coworking brands offer customization options which let enterprises decide the look and feel of their workplace in accordance with their requirements. Enterprises, using this feature, can customize the interiors, lighting, and even the furniture to set
the mood and ensure their employees are working at their productive best.

5.Automation and expansion of services:

Coworking spaces are becoming tech-savvy. trend of co-working spaces

3 Reasons why People Thrive in Co-working Spaces

The evolution of co-working spaces has drastically changed the traditional working culture and has garnered the reputation of harnessing more productivity in people. According to a Harvard Business Review study, co-workers thrive at a rate of 6% to 7% higher than conventional workspaces and therefore in the last few years, companies and individuals are becoming more inclined towards the concept. Being at a co-working space allows people and organisations to connect, learn and grow as they get the opportunity to interact with people belonging to diverse fields of work.
Unlike traditional office spaces, which have caged cubicles and a rigid working environment, co-working spaces enable workers to work with more freedom in a vibrant ambience which results in more productivity in them. These places are the perfect melange of futuristic workspaces and community-driven employee culture where workers can find the perfect work-life balance and hence, become more productive. Let’s find out what are the reasons for which co-working places have become the most preferred destination for the present working class.

1) Flexibility of Work

Co-working spaces came into being with the aim to nurture communities of non-competitive professionals by encouraging them to work individually or by collaborating with others at their will. Although over the years, the ideology has changed and co-working offices are no longer confined to non-competitive professionals, yet flexibility is still the core value of these workspaces. Being at a co-working space, organisations and individuals can choose flexible working hours and desired workspaces that work for them. Contrary to the common notion that one loses its personal space at co-working spaces, the truth is there is no forced interaction in co-working places and thus, is suitable for all kinds of workers ranging from hermits to gossipmongers. For example, an introvert who likes to work in isolation but needs the office vibe to be more productive, he or she can work with confidence without socialising with others. On the contrary, if an extrovert who uses socialising as an excuse to brainstorm ideas and be more creative, co-working is the perfect place for him. Co-working offices offer opportunities for everyone to be more productive and successful.
2) Sense of Community

Being at a co-working space can integrate a sense of pride among the workers to be a part of a productive and flourishing community. It helps them to interact with people with a similar mindset and build strong personal and professional relationships. A great place to collaborate with others and learn, co-working spaces offer incredible opportunities to organisations and individuals to create and expand their network in order to thrive in their respective fields. Working at a co-working place instils a sense of oneness among the workers which motivates them to go to work every day without fail and work with sheer dedication to producing better results. Also, it has been observed that being in a community helps employees to be more structured and disciplined, thereby making them more efficient and productive. The community managers at these places never leave a stone unturned and walk that extra mile to make sure the employees are better equipped to be more productive so that they can work with full potential and ensure improved efficiency.
3) Creative and Unique Working Spaces

With the emergence of co-working offices, organisations and individuals are getting the chance to choose their workspaces according to their preference and style. There are a host of co-working space providers which offer customisable office spaces to ensure more productivity by creating a workplace that defines their unique style of working. A vibrant and exciting workplace can cultivate enhanced productivity in employees and ensure result yielding outcomes. Generally, co-working spaces are considered to be a place for all as they offer different styles of workspaces which can cater to every individual or organisation. Be it a freelancer, a start-up company, small or mid-sized organisations or the big brands in the market, co-working offices provide all the necessary features needed to be more productive and become successful.
It is clear that the culture of flexibility, collaboration, community and the presence of unique yet comfortable workspaces in co-working offices help people to thrive in these places. Co-working places create the right balance of freedom and structure which pushes employees to work efficiently and create opportunities for both employee and the organisation to succeed. Looking at the present scenario it can be concluded that co-working is the future of workspaces and it won’t be long when co-working will become the way of life for the entire working class.
