Chapter 3: 4 Home Productivity Hacks by Celebrities like Richard Branson

Chapter 3: 4 Home Productivity Hacks by Celebrities like Richard Branson

In our last productivity chapter, we elaborated on hacks that can make your productivity at work go from a dull zero to an exhilarating 100. While there is still an ample amount of advice available on the internet for work, very few foci on the homefront.

Most of us associate productivity with things we do at work and fail to understand that productivity at work is directly proportional to productivity at home. The way we start our day or actions that we take back home, augment our productivity and allow us to make most of our day.

Keeping this in mind, we did some hard work for you and dove into the daily lives of successful people to understand what keeps them going. Here are four actionable takeaways that you can start immediately to make a difference in your daily life.

Have a morning ritual
How many of you snooze the alarm until you have no choice but to quickly shower, race out the door, and grab some (unhealthy) breakfast on the way to work? We see a lot of heads nodding.

A productive day undoubtedly starts with a productive morning. Having the first 30-60 minutes of your day to yourself is a highly effective yet most understated productivity hack. These first few minutes of the day not only give you a great head start but also allow you to invest in your body and mind.

In fact, a lot of millionaires of our generation have their own version of morning rituals. Where Richard Branson (Founder of the Virgin Group) swims around his island and play tennis before sitting down for a healthy breakfast, Jack Dorsey (co-founder of Twitter & Square) wakes up at 5.30 to meditate, followed by a 6-mile jog, Indra Nooyi, on the other hand, wakes up as early as 4 am and reaches office no later than 7 am.

So the first step to being productive at home begins with finding your version of ‘morning time’ and sticking to it.

To-do list to the rescue
The way you structure your day can either hurt or help your productivity. When you know exactly what you need to do and get done, you can then hit the ground running the first thing when you start your day.

You save time without having to think or organize your day because you already know what to do. But unfortunately, most people get to the office at the very last minute and then spend their time thinking about what to do. And that’s where a ‘to-do list’ comes into the picture.

Just like a morning ritual, it is also a productivity hack that contributes to many people’s successes, including Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX) and Nathan Blecharczyk (billionaire, and co-founder of Airbnb). In fact, some successful people go the extra mile and give each day a job or theme. This means that they devote certain days of their work to different types of work. For example, on Mondays, they would focus on meetings, Tuesdays for product development, Wednesdays for marketing and so-on.

Simply put, start your day with an agenda and a plan ahead because people who fail to plan for their day, eventually become a part of other people’s plans.

Accomplish something beyond work
A healthy work-life balance is not only about succeeding at work or earning a certain digit figure. It’s about having a sense of accomplishment, both at work and at home. Make room for things that can fit into your overall vision for work and life.

It could be as simple as reading a book you’ve always wanted to, watching a long DIY video, being more involved in your kids’ football, dance or drama practices or doing something long-planned as learning a guitar or any new language.

All you have to do and decide is that ‘one thing’ that always takes a back seat and you will definitely see a change.

Make it home for dinner (Always!)
There is always more to be done, more that should be done, and more that can be done. But work shouldn’t stop you from spending time with your family, and most importantly yourself.

And making it home in time for dinner is a productivity hack that makes you realize that there will always be more to do at work, you just need to decide when to take a hard stop intentionally. Just remember that spending time with your family and taking time at night to rest and recharge is always a wise decision.

Bonus Tip
By now, we’re guessing that our tips are being put to action. So, try and keep things as simple as possible. If you are writing down your to-do list, focus on things you intend to finish in maximum of 32 hours, starting a workout regime- start with 30 minutes a day, making room for things you always wanted to do- take baby steps and start with something simple. The idea is to find your inner peace, both at work and at home.

Smartworks Takes Bengaluru!

A casual stroll in Cubbon park, an exciting evening at Koramangla, breakfast at Brahmins’ Coffee Bar or a shopping spree at Brigade road. Bengaluru is not just a melting pot of cultures but also the Silicon Valley of the country. Here, a number of successful startups were conceived and today, new ones are born every fortnight. So, the tech-first city invariably became our choice for our newest coworking space.

With recently launched centres in Hyderabad and Mumbai, we’re all set to launch our biggest centre yet in Bengaluru. We’re thrilled to be back in the city to open our second centre at the Global Tech Park in the beautiful suburb of Bellandur.

Accessibility feels like a dream in a city known for its exasperating traffic. To soften this blow, we decided on a strategic location to ensure your corporate life is a joyride. Our flagship centre is easily accessible to all parts of the city via BMTC and close proximity to key residential hubs like Outer Ring Road, Bellandur et al. Keeping in mind the frequency of travel for work, the Baiyappanahalli metro station, and the KR Puram railway station are at a distance of 15 km and 10.5 km respectively.

The luxurious marble-finished double-height lobby and perfectly manicured lawn will greet you as soon as you step into the spacious compound.  It not only offers plenty of natural light but also superior indoor air quality. As you look around, biophilic architecture and open walkways will catch your eye. Furthermore, the enormous centre has enough space to house 5000 members.

The members enjoy benefits like multi-cuisine restaurants, planned crèche and gym facilities in the vicinity of their workspace. Not to forget, our offices have opened the doors to your furry friends as well (pet-friendly). Whether it’s taking a much-needed coffee break in the smart cafeteria or a quick pop-in to the nearby mall, this new centre has it all. In addition to malls, the centre is at a stone’s throw away from premier hotels like Royal Park Plaza, NOVOTEL, Aloft, IBIS, CITRUS and retail outlets like More HyperMart, Total Mall.

We’re excited to take a plunge into Bengaluru’s bustling tech scene through the reinvention of traditional office spaces. We’re certain that our coworking space will become an indispensable part of the city. Come and experience the true essence of coworking and productivity at our centre!

Two steps up in Mumbai

Sitting by the calming waters on Marine drive or indulging in some celebrity spotting at the Pali Hill Cafe, Mumbai is the city of dreams, success, and stardom. The natives are always on-the-go, looking for the next best thing in town. Mumbai is not just a thriving business hub but also home to a million starry-eyed aspirants hoping to make it big! This grandeur and hunger to succeed made us open not one but two coworking centres in Mumbai, the burgeoning city!

Both our centres are found in prime locations making accessibility easy in a city known for its exasperating traffic. The first is in the Fleet House, Andheri East and the second in Indiabulls Finance Centre, Dadar West.

Smartworks Centre in Fleet House, Mumbai

Smartworks Andheri is the preferred location for corporates who want the best of cost and class. Metro connectivity feels like a dream as this centre is seamlessly connected from West Andheri to Ghatkopar. On top of that, the proximity to the airport is a mere  3 – 5 km. It’s not just close to residential areas like Goregaon, Malad, Borivali, Powai, Vikhroli but also to the malls & hotels like Holiday Inn, Westin, Infiniti Mall, Inorbit Mall, and Oberoi mall.

In terms of connectivity, the Indiabulls Finance Centre is no less! Located only half a kilometer away from the railway station, it’s sure to solve all your travel woes. Moreover, it’s at a stone’s throw from top-rated hotels and malls like Shangri-La and Phoenix respectively.

These premium quality, high-end commercial centers’ strategic locations and features like biophilic architecture and creative collaborated zones make them the ideal business hubs. Furthermore, these expansive centres boast of high-end cafes and multi-cuisine restaurants in their compound. Whether it’s taking a much-needed coffee break or a quick pop-in to the nearby mall, these centres have it all.

We’re glad to be a part of this bustling city and are certain that our coworking centres in Mumbai will become an indispensable part of it. Come and experience the true essence of coworking and productivity at our centre!

Building a Workplace (Co-working Office space) That Works

Fun. Inspiring. Productive. Engaging. If you wouldn’t define your office space with any or all of those terms, then there is definitely something not right with your co-working office space.

There are multiple reasons to push each one of us off balance at work. For some, it could be the slightest commotion, like swinging doors or talkative employees, while for others, it could be disruptions like unplanned meetings or frequent discussions. However, the one thing that distracts almost everyone is the dull or boring workspace. There are numerous reports, indices, and studies such as Gensler’s Workplace Index, The Leesman Index,  Steelcase, and others that explore the relationship between the office space and business performance metrics, productivity, and what employees value.

As per these reports, co-working office space is strongly correlated to employee productivity and performance and even a small shift can have a dramatic impact.

This physical workspace is the one we see, touch or smell. It could be the art that hangs on the walls, the office floor plan, a colleague sitting next to you, and any other perks we might get in form of catered meals in a beautiful cafeteria, an on-site gym, or a video game area that we (employees) can use to unwind a bit.

But before reading on, think for a minute about your co-working office space and how it makes you feel. Do you get excited and energized or do you feel as if you are walking into a hospital or a doctor’s office?

If it’s the latter, then there is some learning to pull out from some of the greatest offices across the globe. Both the employers and the employees play crucial roles in making these blueprints effective.

There are no ‘fit-for-all’ workspaces

Some of the most progressive offices across the globe are not just about an open floor plan or a cubicle, rather they’re about giving employees multiple moods of working. Consider SAP, Europe’s largest technology company, which has an open environment, cubicles, a collaborative innovation hub, a co-working cafe, conference rooms, smaller meeting rooms, and areas for presentations. LinkedIn, Cisco, Airbnb, and many other organizations have similar environments. To put it simply, the key is to shift away from having a single floor plan to integrating and incorporating multiple floor plans to improve productivity.

Imbibe your culture

As opposed to what is largely believed and perceived, productive office spaces are not just about throwing around beanbags, ping pong tables, and cool looking art just for the sake of doing so; rather, they are strategic investments. A desk, cubicle or a workspace must reflect the values and the culture of the organization. For instance, a walk down the design firm IDEO’s San Francisco office feels like wandering into a child’s playhouse, with jars of colorful paper clips, pens, and other tools for creative expression lined up at the entrance.

IDEO’s San Francisco office

Innovate, change, implement, repeat

According to a few experts on productive workspaces, one should treat their physical space like software. Just like you iterate, make changes, upgrade, and evolve software, physical space needs to be thought of in the same way. Take for example Airbnb, which constantly experiments and tests new office layouts and environments every now and then.

In a nutshell, creating inspiring office spaces is not about spending millions of dollars on changing the entire look and feel of the workspace. Instead, they are small changes that help organizations and employees shift away from thinking of work as a utility to ‘beautiful experiences’.

A Sneak Peek into Incredible Smartworks’ 2 Years Journey

They say time flies when you are having fun. We didn’t realize this until last month, when we flipped back through our pages, only to find that it has been Smartworks’ 2 years journey since our founders, Neetish Sarda & Harsh Binani kickstarted Smartworks.

Smartworks was born as a vision of moving beyond mundane offerings of conventional business centers and co-working spaces. It was about creating office spaces that challenge workplace monotony. A place where people ‘want’ to go and not just ‘have to go’.

Our dream soon turned into a reality with our first office space in Times Square, Gurgaon in April 2016. Since then there has been no looking back! Currently at 1 million sq. ft., with a presence in 9 cities and 15 centers, and catering to 250+ clients across large enterprises, SMEs, start-ups, and freelancers, we are rapidly expanding in India.

Some of our clients include Amazon Web Services, Tata Communications, Microsoft, Bacardi, Incedo, DHL among others.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of many people who have had a role to play in this journey.

Here’s an infographic celebrating Smartwork’s significant milestones. The Smartworks’ journey has just begun with many more milestones to achieve!

office spaces

Why office spaces need to reflect your brand personality

One chic glass and wood table surrounded by several comfortable ergonomic chairs, big enough to fit the entire team. A wall of inspiration at the far end of the office spaces adorned with quotes from the world’s leading business tycoons. Adjacent to that would be a cozy corner with a big window overlooking the city.

Or maybe, a space reflecting our legacy. Walls graced with paintings of Rajasthan’s streetscapes and some theme-related furniture at the reception. Meeting rooms with names suited for royalty and desks with calming colour schemes.

Every entrepreneur has something that is unique to their business. This uniqueness is what made them stand out from the crowd and achieve the success they always wished for. Without a doubt, a unique business calls for unique office space to match up with the idiosyncrasies.

Unfortunately, many business owners unwillingly settle for office spaces that look like they were built in other century or worse, office spaces that give a whole new definition to ‘soul-sucking’ desk job. On the other hand, a lively and cheerful office synonymous with the spirit of your business can do wonders for you and your employees. More importantly, an innovative and functional office, along with an engaging company culture will not only improve employee happiness and productivity but will also go a long way towards attracting top talent to your business for years to come. It has been researched that employees’ productivity is directly proportional to work ambience and culture.

Even though the benefits are endless, owning an office space that suits your business and your employees is an unfulfilled dream. Our question to you is, why is a dream office considered nothing short of a dream? And what if we told you we could make your dream office a reality? Surprised? Watch our new video to get all the answers!

Factors For Choosing Best Co-working Space

Location combined with amenities stand out as integral factors in choosing co-working space

Going by famous expression coined by real-estate tycoons, three factors matter the most when it comes to real estate- ‘Location, Location & Location.’ This dictum is followed by a majority of people in the business.

While we’re no real-estate gurus, we do have an expertise when it comes to choosing the right co-working space for your business. There is plenty of advice floating around on the internet and in the real world for businesses on a lookout for shared spaces. Mostly this information is either too amateur or too complicated to decipher and follow resulting in a confused business, unable to make the right decision for their selves.

We, at Smartworks, to make it easier and precise skip the technical and cumbersome jargon and shift our focus to only two factors. The first, passed on to us by real-estate legends- Location. Second, a factor we figured out with our experience in the business- Amenities/ Facilities.

Why Location?

A centrally located office is largely significant in how much value you get out of your membership. A location, having good transport connectivity, nearby entertainment facilities and convenient stores, decent restaurants, parks or other reputed companies is a win-win situation for your business. An impressive neighbourhood or a prestigious cyber park not only impresses potential clients but serves as a lucrative factor for the prospective employees as well. A short stroll in the park post lunch or an evening out at a nearby restaurant with colleagues serves as a welcome break from the mundane routine at the office.

On the flip side, choosing or getting a centrally located office space is no easy feat. Every location requires a thorough research and some ground-breaking determination to finalise. When it comes to a co-working space, the importance grows manifold.

For instance, at Smartworks, we make sure that our offices are located in the heart of the city to cater to the needs of a majority of businesses. Yet, an essential factor to remember is that every business has its own requirements so always choose a location that works for you and the needs of your business.

What to look out for?

  • Easy to reach
  • Good parking facility
  • Superior connectivity to public transport
  • Safety and security precautions
  • Convenience

Why Amenities/ Facilities?

Does your business require a fast Wi-Fi connection, access to an excellent 3D printer, Skype room for client calls, suitable space for brainstorming sessions? Or you need something for yourself like a cup of coffee or tea early morning, a cafeteria offering healthy food or home-cooked food options? Clean toilets?

First of all, it’s quite challenging to work in an office not offering facilities which are a necessity for your business. Secondly, it’s equally difficult to work in a space which does not cater to your basic needs as well. Every office-goer has some requirements to be fulfilled. It’s simple logic- the more needs met means an increase in the happiness index of employees which automatically equals better performance at work and an increased job satisfaction. That is precisely why it’s also important to find a co-working space that gives you everything else you need to maximise your work experience.

The creation or complete destruction of the value proposition of office space depends entirely on the infrastructure and amenities it has to offer.

Ideally, a business should look for a co-working space that caters to all their needs by providing a membership plan which makes you productive sans lucrative extras you will never use.

A co-working office space like Smartworks offers all the basic as well as luxurious amenities like a Smart cafe or a weekly entertainment session. On top of that, a co-working facility like ours helps balance the work/life equation and provides a daily dose of fun as well!

What to look out for?

  • Engaging working environment
  • Good internet connection
  • Sanitary bathrooms
  • 24-hour electricity back-up
  • Good cafeteria and drinking water
  • Comfortable seating facility etc.
coworking technical support

When all else fails, tech support saves!

The life of an ordinary office-goer involves everything from dealing with clients, making presentations, to handling technical difficulties. While most of us sail through the above issues, it’s the technical problems that has even the most patient colleague frantically hitting their keyboard in utter frustration. Service providers are nowadays not only provide shared or coworking spaces but technical-support is an integral part of these services

Fortunately, we live in an era where most of our tech issues are solved through tutorials or how-to’s available online. On the other hand, some issues require swift action from the tech support. Why? The following real-life example will answer your question.

A colleague worked as a senior manager in a well-known consultancy firm at his previous job. One day, he was finishing up some final documents before closing the project which the team had been working on for six months. During the process, his system prompted him to download a new upgrade to the existing software.

Taking that as a menial task, he downloaded the software while half-heartedly reading the instructions. One confusion led to another, and his entire system crashed. He was nonplussed that how something so simple could be so complex at the same time. That’s where the problem lies. However tech savvy one might be, such a situation could only be solved by the tech support team.

Needless to say, a dedicated tech support is a necessity for almost every firm. It not only saves you time and effort, it (literally) saves your ‘work’ too. At Smartworks, our services are not only confined to offering coworking technical support, but we have a tech associate available on call to ensure our clients never lose out due to a technical snag.

To shed light on this relatable issue, we launched our latest brand film to tell our audience to focus on their work and leave the hassle-filled technical problems to an expert.
